A VERY BUSY AND ERRATIC WEEK

Well... I know it's been a while between posts, but we're all still alive, kicking and generally doing well, adjusting to each other and a new life together. We just seem to be so disorganized and scattered that the blog is not at the top of our list of priorities right now. Our life has been restructured; taken over by soft, pastel colors, nap times, how to make the perfect bottle, and endless discussions about the various pros and cons of different diapers, formulas, foods, clothes, etc.... Oh, and poop. Lots of discussions about poop and occasionally the lack thereof.

So here's a bit of an update.... Since our last post there have been even more firsts for Elysa and us. It seems like its been sooo much longer than three weeks since we first met her in Nanchang! Whenever I think about how this or that isn't going according to our "plan" or desires, I just try to think about how out of whack I feel, and then try to imagine how much worse it must be for Elysa.

The whole time we were in China, she kept messing with her hair, and when she'd get tired, she'd rub her hair in her eyes until they were red. So, her first haircut was ordered up shortly after getting home. The deed was performed by Tina's longtime hairdresser. Elysa didn't even seem to notice that her hair was being messed with and, now that it's done, she doesn't fuss with her hair as much; until she finds whatever little hairpiece mom has put in for the day. Sometimes she leaves them alone, other times, they come right out.

After being home a few days, we ventured out to the lake in town for a little exercise. Judging Elysa's reaction to having her toes in grass, we're guessing this was a first for her. After a few tentative steps, she really seemed to enjoy it. She also watched her puppy chase frisbees, which she seemed to think was quite funny.

She had her first visit with her U.S. doctor a week ago. While waiting, she was watching all the other babies in the waiting room. She seemed a little bit anxious, but also curious. We wondered if maybe she was recalling the last time she was in a room full of strangers and babies, and if that was making her nervous. This visit was not so much of a fun time for her, especially the shots...but she toughed it out. Now we have to do all the lab tests so we have a good baseline on her overall health. I'm sure that will be a happy time for all of us (NOT)! We found out that she did in fact, still have an ear infection.

Several family members from out of state came into town over this last week to see all of the family that lives in our area, and of course, welcome Elysa to the family. Some of the family even stayed with us. She did pretty well with all the new people and distruptions to a very new and weak routine, EXCEPT for the whole sleep issue. More on that later. We went to the beach this last weekend and she got her feet wet in the Pacific for the first time. She thought it was funny, and enjoyed watching her puppy chase a ball and jump around in the shallow surf (he is a little dog after all).

She is eating very well, and so far we have found very little that she doesn't like. She doesn't however, like to drink much of anything, which is becoming an issue because she is eating more, and drinking less formula. We continue to try new, old, and any old thing we can think of to get her to drink more fluids, short of giving her a bunch of sugary drinks.

Sleep continues to be the challenge for all of us. She had several very good nights in a row, where she was sleeping at night, and napping well during the day. It was just that she wasn't going to sleep until 2200 hours. Then today, she missed a midday nap. So tonight, out of the blue, she melted down and got hyper alert like she did on the plane. Between the two of us we managed to get her to sleep, but we'll see if it lasts all night or not. We suspect that some of her fussiness is teething pain. She is also still having random bouts of greiving.

She now is more active, and is spening more time on her tummy. She can scoot backwards, but can't quite coordinate the forward crawl. She gets quite frustrated when something she wants is just out of reach!

Here's a parting shot of Elysa and her puppy. They seem to be accepting each other pretty well.

...and here's one that Tina snapped without my knowledge or consent, but she thinks is funny...more later!

WE ARE HOME!!!

We arrived in at PDX on May 17th at 8am. After passing through customs and immigration our little girl officially became an American citizen.

OUR LITTLE AMERICAN GIRL

Thursday was one long day and Elysa, the international traveler that she is,did great until the last 1/2, of the last plane change home (the long 9 hour flight). She then was just simply overly tired and had way to much stimulation around her to be able to try and sleep. Needless to say once we got home all she and us wanted to do was sleep.
These first four days home have been extremely rough for all of us. Elysa wants to sleep all day and play all night...Her schedule we had her on in China was so good and she did wonderful with it. Since being home it has been very hard trying to get her back on that schedule. We have to wake her up for her naps in the day so we can try and get sleep from her at night...
These last few days we have been pretty successful with the schedule in the day getting on track but not so successful with staying asleep at night. We set the alarm clock for her naps to get her up in an hour or so and of course all of us could continue to sleep for several more hours. Fred and I are like zombies and feel so fuzzy in the head. We are trying to sleep when she does but its just wrecking havoc on our systems...
It is sooo much harder coming back from china and getting back on track than it was going to china and getting on their time. We are glad we have off from work right now to get her and us onto a schedule and of course we are just praying it doesn't take 6 weeks to this. We went to town for the first time today to get some necessities and Elysa, Fred and I were exhausted and ready to go back to bed when we got home.
Its way to much for her to sleep in her crib and wake up without us near by so she's been sleeping with us and needless to say this also wrecks havoc on our quality of sleep when she's the sprawler of all sprawlers. No matter what though she is always so angelic looking whether she's asleep or not.

YEP, SHE'S A SPRAWLER (sleeps much better when she can do so)

FIRST BREAKFAST AT HOME (egg and prunes)

We received two disposable cameras on our Meetcha day (Family Day, the day we met Elysa. So the orphanage and the foster mom had received our packages and someone took lots of pictures. We guarded these with our life until we got home to get them developed. Here is a picture of Elysa and her precious foster mom. No words can thank her for the wonderful, loving care she provided Elysa during her first 10months of life. Elysa still has several periods throughout the day that she just wails and her crying just breaks our hearts. Its a sad, grieving cry. Night time is worse than during the day. She is very insecure and is constantly looking for both of us and whines/wails when she lies down at night or when one of us leaves her sight in the daytime.

ELYSA AND HER FOSTER MOM

Even though we are rummy, fuzzy in the head and deprived of sleep we are both very thankful for this beautiful, precious little girl that has been brought into our lives. She has added so much to our lives in these first 14 days and we look forward to many more experiences, hopefully with more sleep...heheheheheh.

MY BLOSSOMING BUTTERFLY!!!

Today is our last full day in Nanchang. We visited the Tenweng Pavilion which was absolutely beautiful but I haven't been able to download my pictures yet. Yesterday we went to the People's Park and to Walmart (Warmar as they call it here). Its a basic Walmart, NOT, 4 stories high with escalators to each floor and very, very busy. The People's park was so tranquil you would never guess it was in the middle of a large city with thousands of people. Many of the women young and old loved coming up to the babies and talking with us. They practiced their english and we our mandarin. Our guide Marsha said, the majority of people in China are grateful for people adopting their children but they also have great shame in it that they cannot care for their own children. As we walk through the streets and areas of Nanchang Fred and I wonder how many women we have passed who have at sometime in their life abandoned a child. We wonder if they look at our group and hope that their biological child was able to be adopted and have a better life with a family somewhere in the world.
We are so grateful to have Elly (Elysa) in our lives, our dream has finally come true and its much better than I could ever have imagined. She is such a sweetheart!!! Every day Elly's personality is emerging. She is a very active little girl and loves to be around people, she has not fussed or cried unless its due to a nap time or meal time. She is about 16 pounds and is wearing 6-9 month clothing right now. The 12 month clothing is large on her. Some how I have to figure out how to put a ponytail in her beautiful, fine, silky black, hair but for now I am using hairbands as they at least help to keep her hair out of her face. She has a large cowlick in the back of her head and she as a natural hairstyle. A natural part to the right and the cowlick makes her look like she has a bouffant. She sits up well but does occasionally wobble a little. She is not able to completely roll over yet. As the picture shows she got stuck the first time and needed help with getting her arm out. She has very strong legs and arms though so I know she will catch up fast.

32 HOURS SINCE MEETING ELYSA!!

Yesterday was absolute chaos and such an emotional roller coaster. We have some great video of our first time seeing Elysa. The girls were across the room with their orphanage director prior to being handed over to each family and we were all able to pick out our babies. We each were handed our babies one after another. Elysa initially was calm and just staring at me, I started to cry and then she started wailing. A very loud, mournful, sad wail and was constantly looking around to try and find her caregiver. She would calm down for awhile then do a whining, mournful whimper and at times just wail loudly for a period of time off and on. It was so sad and hard to listen to as there was nothing you could do but comfort her. It just broke my heart and made me cry. We had to run around to 3 different places yesterday for paper signing with all the babies/families. We were all just dripping wet with sweat because it was so hot both inside and outside the buildings. We did receive her little lovie and 2 cameras back with pictures on them but we plan to develop when we get home. We had to stop showing her lovie to her for now as it seemed to upset her more but she is liking the lovie I brought for her so that's good.

Last night she had a very hard time settling down and going to sleep. She was fighting it and just did more of her sad, mournful crying. At some point, I think she fell asleep from just being tired of crying. She slept from 2130 to 0430. Then today she did take two one hour naps with some occasional mournful crying. She is eating well and we finally had a successful POO today without the need for anything, but boy did she work hard at having it. Last night I did start her on the amoxcillin as she was pulling and digging at her ears alot and had a congested, stuffy nose. We have also been using the tylenol for her ears and she's also teething. The medicine seems to help her feel better overall and her personality is starting to emerge. Today the husband's went to Fengcheng while the babies and mom's stayed home.

Our beautiful Elysa is so much more than we have ever dreamed of. She is so sweet and precious. She is constantly on alert and looking at others around us. She is such a gem. We have been going over her little homemade faces book and she just laughs and gets all excited when she sees Aidan's pictures, it so cute. She is very attune to Fred and I and doesn't want us far from her sight. She is adjusting very well and has her moments of grieving but that's ok because we know she was attached well.

T- MINUS 13 HOURS AND COUNTING!!!

We are finally just a few hours from meeting Miss Elysa (aka Elly or Ele). We woke up this morning and left for the Beijing Airport at 0930 where we boarded for Nanchang. We arrived there around 2:30p and then we went to a local supermarket where we bought Elysa's formula. When we arrived at the hotel and came to our room it all become so real that we are here to get our little butterfly. We checked in around 5:30p and from there we prepared our room for Elysa and put the gifts together for the various people who have cared for her. We are excited and can't believe that in just a few hours we will be proud parents of this beautiful little girl. It still all seems so surreal even though we are standing in China about to meet our daughter.

Elysa, right now you are somewhere between Nanchang and Fengcheng sleeping and waiting to meet your mama and baba. Your life and ours' are about to change and turn upside down. However, together as a family we will make it through these difficult days you will have, and your beautiful personality will blossom. We love you and absolutely are thrilled to finally have you in our arms safe and sound!!!

THE FOLLOWING WERE THE THINGS WAITING FOR US AND THE OTHER ADOPTIVE PARENTS IN THE GROUP

FORMULA (shopping for this and water was an interesting trip)

DIAPER CHANGE STATION (note the beautiful diaper pad MiMa made)

BED (her little lovie, couple of toys and her photo book)

BEIJING SIGHTSEEING DAY 2!!!

Today we were up around 5-6am, usual time if at home. However, Dawn and Fred have been waking up around 3am wide awake and not able to go back to sleep...Can't say I have had that problem, I wake up but no problems getting back to sleep. The beds are pretty comfortable overall. We had a pretty slow day compared to yesterday and we were back in the hotel by 5pm.
I was trying to talk Marsha into taking us to an actual apothecary in china. I have a very dry, scratchy throat, cough and hoarse voice from the pollution and she said she knows just the cure. We were on our way there but had an unfortunate detour. We'll see if we can find a place like that in Nancheng.

Jade Factory
Very beautiful statue pieces and jewelry of all kinds. Yep, couldn't contain myself. We really enjoyed our time here....best tip...real jadite actually turns a different color over time and when tapped with an object has a very high pitched ring to it...just because it looks green and says its jadite doesn't mean it really is...

We all made it onto the wall we just ended at various points of the wall with Fred coming out on top as the "Biggest Hero of the Day". Chairman Mao's famous poem engraved on a stone on the wall reads "you are a hero if you stand on the Great Wall"

Group by Great Wall

Tina on Great Wall

Dawn on Great Wall

Fred on the very top of Great Wall and at the end of this section...
"its lonely at the top". But he is the biggest Hero of us all!!!

Lunch and some very interesting "chinese type of whiskey" which we all tried but this was the first shot done with Marsha our guide and "the boys".

Pearl Factory
I was able to contain myself in the shopping here....but now I know how to see if the pearls I have at home are real or not. When rubbed together do they make NO noise and produce a powder, or are they shiny and when rubbed together make a noise....

Cloisonne Factory
Hummmmm, couldn't contain myself here....everything is so beautiful and the detailed work involved in making each piece is astonishing....Fake-light in weight and rough...real-heavy in weight and very smooth.

We leave for Nancheng tomorrow at 1100, it will only be a 2-3 hour flight....nothing compared to what we have survived. Once we get there we will go shopping at Wally World (of all places) to gather baby supplies. Zi Jian, See you all in Nancheng!
